Meet the Designer
Hi, I'm Melinda Nadeau, I'm glad you found the State & Madison website.
The State & Madison concept is my vision for taking Interior Design into the future combined with my dreams, education and experience.
Perhaps I should start out by telling you I see my role as a designer as one of collaborator, consultant, teacher, mentor and merchant.
My journey toward becoming an Interior Designer and Merchant has had many interesting twists and turns along the way. It all started in Chicago.
A Chicago native, I've had a lifelong infatuation with the Windy City as a living architectural museum. Birthplace of the skyscraper, home to Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie Movement, the city practically vibrates with incredible design.
After a successful career in Information Technology, I fulfilled a life-long dream by graduating from the Harrington Institute of Interior Design. Chicago's oldest design school.
Following graduation, my family and I moved to the golden state of California. Also following graduation, I went on to work at a high end residential design firm, did design consulting and co-founded a small design firm with another designer.
In 2009 I decided to combine my two passions, Design and Retail, and launch State & Madison as an online design firm and retail shop. We also offer typical interior design services and room makeovers.
In December of 2002, I graduated from Harrington Institute of Interior Design in Chicago, Illinois. At that time, Harrington was a small private Design College, the oldest in Chicago. It has since been purchased by an educational conglomerate and was renamed Harrington College of Design.
I also have specialized training and certification in Room Makeovers and Staging from I.R.I.S. (a leading National Interior ReDesign and Staging Organization).
Falling in Love....with Retail ..........................
It was a fateful day in 1995 when I went to work for the Spiegel Group / a holding company that owned the Spiegel Catalog and Eddie Bauer.
At the Spiegel Group, I had the great good fortune of being a project manager on projects that involved every operational division. A golden opportunity to learn RETAIL inside and out from Merchandising to Customer Returns and everything in between.
Heady stuff, seeing the new merchandise each season, solving problems at the state of the art distribution center, standing in an Eddie Bauer store and watching the joy on customers faces when they found the perfect treasure.
At the Spiegel Group, the Retail Bug got into my system and I haven't been able to shake it since.
Over the years, I've been selling beautiful home furnishings on eBay and craigslist, and now, here at State & Madison.
Life before Interior Design ..........................
Before deciding to pursue Interior Design, I earned a degree in Information Technology and worked in the field for a number of years.
As a project manager for large corporations such as American Express, Farmers Insurance and Eddie Bauer I learned the valued of great design and impeccable planning.
